So I got a ticket from a redlight camera where I turned right on red. There was no sign saying “ no turn on red”   and I stopped moving before making the turn. Supposedly I didnt stop for long enough and now I have to pay $ 150. I really can’t wait to get off this crappy island. If   it didnt mean thousands of people being underwater I would really wish for the oceans to reclaim this giant mound of BS . If the fine was higher I would fight it but it i snt worth my time or $$$. On the brightside I got some stuff fixed on my mustang and all the parts worked and fit on the first try.

I vaguely remember reading that red light cameras actually increased accidents, so many municipalities started taking them out.

I wouldn’t really know about those stats but at the very least its annoying. Pretty sure my county wouldn't  care even if it was causing   fatalities, they would rather have the revenue anyway . Long Island is filled with red light cameras and most of them are garbage or put in places where they don’t make sense.

Red light cameras had the effect of causing people to panic stop at intersections, which had the effect of causing people behind them unaware to run into them.

Or, sometimes, they would speed through to make the yellow unless it was one of those combo speed cameras as well, although I think the panic stops caused more damage.

People were slamming on the brakes for  yellows and causing accidents.

Yeah, that was the thing. They were causing more “fender benders.” But many people, who happen to be stupid, were saying it was a good trade off. But they’re wrong.

Long island also has a population problem anyway, so accidents aren't a big concern

Umm, “ no turn on red” means no turning   on a red light , even if you stopped first.

I’m not a fan of red-light cameras and speed cameras myself, but this sounds like you did it wrong. If a police car had been folowing you, you would have been pulled over.

They’re upgrading ours to photo-radar  speed cameras here in BC.  2 for 1!

I’d fight it, it’s the county’s burden of prof to prove you didn’t stop.

Fewer crashes  is almost always the better choice. At least, in the automotive world.

When they installed them in places in NM, the data usually showed a decrease in certain kinds of collisions related to running red lights, but there was usually an increase in rear end collisions at the intersections . The net takeaway was usually that they just changed the type of collisions happening.

They did certainly piss lots of folks off, legislature prohibited municipalities from placing them on state roads due to the state not getting a cut of the revenue with citations under city administrative codes   (which took a lot of the busiest interections out of play), there were increasingly better oganized and funded legal efforts to challenge the administrative nature of the process for due process faults , and the cities often found themselves unable to collect a large percentage of the citations. After about five or six years, many cities in NM gave up and removed the cameras. Only a couple of smaller and much more conservative places have kept them going.

The author said there was no sign, therefore you should be permitted to turn right once you come to a complete stop.

Like I said before, it doesnt actually make financial sense for me to fight it. I am better off just paying it and   work on the day I would likely have to fight it.

I am seriously starting to consider making something to sabotage these cameras. A photo/ speed camera would be horrific here. It probably would be ticketing someone every 5 seconds.

I don’t live in NYC where there has to be a sign saying you can turn right on red. T here is no sign saying I can’t meaning I can do so as long as I yield for traffic which I did. The problem is the camera must have thought I just rolled through the intersection which I didn't.

I want the government to allow darwinism to run its course. A large portion of the population are so clueless when they are behind the wheel of a car. I know it sounds heart less but honestly they are a real danger to others and really shouldnt be driving or allowed to live around others. So many people are driving distracted or not following any form of road conventions. I am so thankful when I can get out west where it is a true treat to s hare the road with people who have some driving etiquette.

That definitely would do it. I really wouldn't  want a semi truck behind me in a situation like that.

That what I've read. I don't see it as a net gain. I think they could reduce the red light accidents by increasing the yellow time, and then increasing the between one light turning red, and the next turning green. I would imagine that would decrease the "accidental" red light accidents, and there's no hope for assholes that run red lights no matter what.
